Especially when the weather’s not too good, it’s worth making a detour to the Kleine Melch valley with its spectacular winter footpath. After the frosty yet breathtaking experience, the Restaurant Zollhaus offers a warming experience with its fine fare.

Once at Giswil station, it’s barely half-an-hour to the Zollhaus at the foot of Lake Sarnen. The track along the river leads upwards through the Grossmattwald forest until it turns into the gorge. When crossing the rocky basin, the sound of water is a constant companion and the narrowing cliffs provide perfect conditions in winter for creating huge ice formations.

After the freezing temperatures, a warm and friendly welcome is just what you need. The Restaurant und Hotel Zollhaus serves local specialities in its cosy dining room. If you don’t feel like setting off after a hot Cheli (coffee and schnapps), you can book a room and see the day out while enjoying the views of Lake Sarnen.
