Insider tip – guided walk on the butterfly trail

Explore the butterfly trail with an experienced local trail guide and learn about the colourful butterflies and nature.

The starting point of Switzerland’s unique butterfly trail (SwitzerlandMobility Route No. 575) is easily reached using the Lungern-Turren cableway. Thanks to the traditional ecological cultivation by the mountain farmers, a rich variety of flora and fauna lines the footpath leading down the valley. The mosaic of dry meadows of national importance provides a habitat for over 100 species of diurnal butterflies. Seventeen info-panels describe the most striking ones along way. Most of the colourful butterflies can be observed between June and August.

During the walk, the Turren and Sädel vantage points offer a magnificent panorama consisting mainly of the Bernese and Central Swiss Alps and emerald-green Lake Lungern; at the Äschligrat vantage point, you can see far out into the Sarneraa valley as far as Lake Lucerne. In Blattisdurren and in Schäfschlüecht, you encounter unique erratic gneiss blocks, which were deposited here by a branch of the Aare glacier.

From Bürglen, you can reach the Zentralbahn railway’s Kaiserstuhl station in a few minutes, or you can return to the lower terminus of the Lungern-Turren cableway along the western shore of Lake Lungern.
