Pilatus

The steepest cogwheel railway in the world

Passing lush-green alp meadows, tumbling mountain streams and fascinating rocky cliffs, the world's steepest cogwheel railway has been plying its way between Alpnachstad and Pilatus Kulm since 1889. You'll be amazed by the panoramic views of the Alps!

Awaiting you is more than a unique vista. From time immemorial, the cragged flanks high above Lucerne have been associated with mysterious fables and myths. In the Middle Ages they were said to be home to a dragon and numerous ghosts and spirits. As for Lake Pilatus (now disappeard), it harboured the restless soul of none other than the Roman prefect Pontius Pilate!
