The starting point of the Butterfly Trail, the only one in Switzerland (SwitzerlandMobility route No. 575) can be reached with the Lungern-Turren cable car. Thanks to traditional, ecological cultivation by mountain farmers, a rich flora and fauna line the mountain path leading down to the valley. More than 100 species of diurnal butterflies have been shown to have their habitat in the mosaic of dry meadows of national importance. The most obvious ones are described on 17 information panels along the way. Most of the colourful butterflies can be seen from June to August.

At the Turren and Sädel vantage points, the hike also offers a grandiose panorama, mainly of the Bernese and Central Swiss Alps and emerald-green Lake Lungern; from the Äschligrat, the views extend far out into the Sarneraa valley to Lake Lucerne. In Blattisdurren and Schäfschlüecht one encounters unique erratic gneiss blocks, which were once deposited here by a branch of the Aare glacier.

From Bürglen, you can reach the Zentralbahn's Kaiserstuhl station in a few minutes, or you can continue along the west bank of Lake Lungern back to the lower terminus of the Lungern-Turren cable car.
