Lake Gerzen winter walk
×
The circular walk from the village of Kerns to Lake Gerzen can be undertaken in winter as well as in summer.
From Kerns post office, the path leads along Untergasse to Holzbau Bucher and circles the settlement via Huwel - Rüti to Kägiswilerstrasse. Here it crosses the Kernmattbach stream and climbs up to the Windeggli nursery. The walk continues to Siebeneich and to the chapel in Hostettli, built in 1722 and dedicated to the "weeping Mother-of-God of Budapest". This is why it is regularly visited as a place of pilgrimage by Hungarians living in Switzerland.

From Hostettli, the path takes a shortcut eastwards along the edge of the forest and reaches the little road in the Kernwald forest, which leads to Zubersrüti. Here a generously equipped picnic area complete with barbecue invites you to linger. This is in the middle of the realm of the "Chärwald Robbers", who tell legendary stories on a varied adventure trail.

A prehistoric landslide from the Stanserhorn created the Kernwald's unique topography between Cantons Obwalden and Nidwalden. Idyllic Lake Gerzen is five minutes' walk from the picnic area, radiating natural charms at different times of the year.

Passing the Brandigütsch, the forest road leads to Hübeli and back to Kerns via Ribeten-Mülimatt.
