If it has snowed all the way down to the valley floor, this is an out-of-the-ordinary snowshoe tour in the Sarneraa valley that is rich in history and views.
The house built by Niklaus von Flüe (1417-1487), where he lived with his family as a farmer and councillor before retiring to the Ranft as Brother Klaus in 1467, is located on Flüeliplatz. A footpath runs via Bitzi - Hostettli - Balmetschwand gently up to Schluecht - Oberriedmattli, from where you reach a cross-country forest path. This leads southwest along the edge of the forest to Point 842 and then through the ravine of the Sachsler Dorfbach stream and the Schwandenwald forest to the geographical centre (Point 857) of Canton Obwalden. In 2009, at the completion of the official cadastral survey (AV93), it was marked with a column, and a shelter with barbecue was erected next to it. There are not many places where can you enjoy such a comprehensive overview of the entire Sarneraa valley.

If there is enough snow, you can hike directly down the wide slopes from Gloters to Spilmoos, parallel to the footpath that leads down to the village stream at Point 686, then along it to the shooting range and via Steinen to the pilgrim village of Flüeli-Ranft. Here it is worth visiting the parish church, which has housed the tomb of Brother Klaus since 1679, whose work as a mystic, mediator and man was commemorated in 2017. Restaurants invite you to take a well-deserved rest after your endeavours.
