Sarnen Powder Tower

The Powder Tower (Ger: Pulverturm) was erected in 1661. Prior to this, gunpowder was stored in the Hexenturm tower. As you might expect, keeping explosives in the same place as the village archive was not considered safe: irreplaceable documents as well as the treasury were at risk from sabotage, fire or a lightning strike.

No alternative premises could be found, so the decision was taken to purchase the brick kiln and all its related masonry in the Seefeld quarter – the property of Captain Kaspar Imfeld – and erect a purpose-made powder tower there.
