Lake Melch is at the centre of Melchsee-Frutt, to which it gave its name. It lies at just under alt. 2000 metres and is dammed by an artificial dam. The Hugschwendi power station, which is operated by Elektrizitätswerk Obwalden (EWO), produces electricity.

Fishing
Six different species of trout and char are released in Lake Melch. Numerous fishermen congregate at Melchsee-Frutt for lake fishing. In winter, ice fishing is offered on the frozen lake.

Barbecue spots
There are two barbecue spots near Lake Melch in the Vogelbüel and Balmeregg areas. Dry wood and barbecue grills are available, making grilling sausages child's play for the whole family.

Hiking
A signposted footpath leads around Lake Melch. It can be used with strollers in the anticlockwise direction. A round walk takes about an hour.

In winter, a drag lift pulls skiers and snowboarders across frozen Lake Melch to the Erzegg chairlift and the Balmeregg ski lift on the other shore.
