Alp dairies

×

Switzerland's cheesemaking tradition began with alp cheese. Learn the ins and outs of cheesemaking in one of the alp dairies in Obwalden.

Fluonalp dairy

Do you know how alp cheese is made? The cows on the Fluonalp, one of the loveliest Giswil alps, feed on the very best herbs. And if the glorious views of the Obwalden region have any effect on the finished product, then this is what makes this alp cheese unique. We cordially invite you to pay the dairy at Fluonalp a visit. Make your own cheese. Involve yourself in the whole process, from preparation to labelling. Your alp cheese will be stored and looked after for one year, where upon you can come and collect it. Cheesemaking with a visit to the dairy takes place in the afternoon (prior notification required).

Tannalp dairy

Cheesemaking as it used to be – this alp dairy is one of the few dairies at alt. 1900-plus metres to produce fresh products using traditional methods. Experience how tasty specialities are made from local milk in a vat heated over a wood fire. See the day out in the nearby mountain guesthouse on the Tannalp. The terrace offers magnificent views of the surrounding Central Swiss and Bern Alps mountainscape.

Engelberg show dairy

Here in Switzerland's only monastery-based show dairy, visitors can see how cheese is made by hand. The dairy features four vats in which the milk is turned into Engelberg's famous Klosterglocke cheese all day long. The cheese is manufactured non-stop thanks to the dairy's unique production method. The restaurant serves a variety of cheese platters, as well as tasty fondues and desserts. Novel souvenirs and regional delicacies may be purchased as a souvenir of your visit.
