Älggialp

Geographical centre of Switzerland

Switzerland’s geographical centre is on the Älggialp; it was measured using state-of-the-art technology to mark the 150th anniversary of swisstopo, the country’s geo-information agency.

As the actual centre is located inside a steep flank of rock, it was decided to shift the centre 500 metres southeastwards. The local cairn enthusiasts’ club erected a wall in the shape of Switzerland to surround the triangulation pyramid marking the spot. Standing on the little rise near the Älggi mountain inn, the visitor can enjoy views of the Alpboden, the surrounding ring of mountains and the Swiss Central Plateau.

"Älggi is a centre worthy of the name," declared the lead surveyor; traffic-free and far from any bustle, its peace and quiet provides a perfect setting for relaxation – and perhaps for rediscovering one's own centre.

Actually, Älggi can be reached by car, but it's much nicer to walk there. Possible starting points for a hike are Sachseln, Zollhaus, Giswil, Lungern, Käserstatt, Melchsee-Frutt and Stöckalp.
