Canton Obwalden may be on the small side, but it maintains no fewer than 1000 kilometres of footpaths. Some of them lead to Älggialp — the geographical centre of Switzerland. Others take you to one or more of the canton's 15 lakes. And lots pass one, two or more of Obwalden's 111 lowland and upland restaurants, cafés and so forth – all worth popping in to. Almost all the footpaths offer views, encounters with the local flora and fauna, and idyllic resting and picnic spots. And while some have historical monuments as their goal, others are themed trails of interest to children as well as grown-ups.
